Ferrari have recently appointed Fred Vasseur as their new Team Principal, replacing Mattia Binotto who resigned last month. Let’s take a closer look at why this is a great move for the legendary racing team.
Who is Fred Vasseur?
Fred Vasseur has been a part of the Formula 1 world since 1997 when he joined Renault Sport in an engineering role. He was most recently the Alfa Romeo boss and Sauber Motorsport CEO, and has consistently proven that he can bring out the best in his drivers and teams.
Vasseur’s appointment is highly-anticipated by both fans and members of the Ferrari team alike. Sources say that Ferrari senior management has been considering Binotto’s replacement since 2021 and saw Vasseur as their ideal choice due to his technical strengths as an engineer, combined with his ability to motivate successful teams.
The Move Away From Binotto
Binotto’s resignation came after a turbulent four years at the helm of one of F1’s most famous teams, where they won two championships with Sebastian Vettel before enduring two difficult seasons with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., during which time they failed to win a single race.
Binotto had previously been credited for masterminding Ferrari’s resurgence back in 2016-18, but it seemed clear that a change was needed if the team wanted to make any progress in 2021. The appointment of Fred Vasseur will allow them to do just that; bringing fresh ideas and energy into the fold while also relying on his wealth of experience.
Ferrari have made an excellent decision by appointing Fred Vasseur as their new Team Principal – one that will undoubtedly provide them with a much-needed boost heading into 2021 and beyond. With such a talented engineer at the helm, all eyes are now on Ferrari to see how they will capitalize on this opportunity to get back to winning ways next season. We wish Mr. Vasseur all the best in his new role.
